Clastogen

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002104

An agent or substance that induces structural chromosomal aberrations, such as breaks, deletions, or rearrangements within a cell's genetic material. This damage, known as clastogenesis, results from interactions with DNA that disrupt the physical integrity of the chromosome, leading to fragmented or reconfigured genetic sequences. Unlike aneugens, which alter the total number of chromosomes, clastogens affect the structure of individual chromosomes, with effects detectable by cytogenetic methods like the micronucleus test or chromosomal aberration assay.
