Blow a backsight

A colloquial expression in surveying indicating an error or mistake made when taking a backsight reading. This error can result from misreading the rod, improper leveling of the instrument, or incorrect recording of the data. A blown backsight introduces inaccuracies that propagate through all subsequent measurements in a survey traverse or level loop.
