Hammer blow

A dynamic force exerted by the rotating wheels of a steam locomotive onto the track, caused by the unbalanced reciprocating masses of the engine. This vertical impact can contribute to track degradation and fatigue over time. The magnitude of hammer blow increases with locomotive speed and the degree of wheel imbalance.
