Lightweighting
Term · Additive manufacturing and 3D printing · MLC-T-ADM-000204
A design and manufacturing strategy focused on reducing the mass of a component while maintaining its required functional performance, such as strength and stiffness. In additive manufacturing, this is achieved by creating complex geometries like internal lattice structures or topology-generated forms, which subtract material from non-load-bearing areas. The resulting part has a higher strength-to-weight ratio compared to a solid, conventionally manufactured counterpart.
