Extent of reaction

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004265

A quantity that measures how far a chemical reaction has advanced, defined by the change dxi = dn(i) / nu(i), where dn(i) is the change in the amount of any reactant or product and nu(i) is its stoichiometric number, negative for reactants. It is an extensive quantity with the SI unit mole, and it is zero at the start. Dividing it by its maximum possible value gives the dimensionless degree of reaction.
