An Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) standard for wireless local area networks (WLANs) operating in the 5 GHz frequency band. It uses Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiplexing (OFDM) to achieve theoretical maximum data rates of up to 54 Mbps. This standard was less widely adopted than 802.11b due to its shorter range and higher cost at the time of its introduction.
