Abend

An abnormal end of a software task or program due to an error condition that it cannot handle. The term originated in IBM mainframe operating systems, where an abend triggers a memory dump for debugging purposes. This is distinct from a controlled program termination, where the software completes its execution path, even if it reports an error to the user.
