Any item, piece of equipment, or software product used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities. These tools range from low-tech solutions like large-print keyboards to high-tech systems such as screen readers, voice recognition programs, and alternative input devices. The United States Assistive Technology Act of 1998 provides federal funding to states for such technologies.
