A method of internet access that establishes a connection over a standard telephone line. It converts digital signals from a computer into analog signals for transmission across the public switched telephone network, then back again at the receiving end. Connection speeds are limited by the telephone line's bandwidth, typically reaching a maximum of 56 kilobits per second (kbps).
