Indexed color
Term · Computing and IT · MLC-T-CMP-000584
A method for representing colors in a digital image to reduce file size. Instead of storing a full color value for each pixel, the image stores a limited palette of colors, and each pixel's value is an index into that palette. This technique is characteristic of image formats like GIF, which supports a palette of up to 256 colors, corresponding to an 8-bit index per pixel.
