Modifier key

A type of key on a keyboard that changes the function of another key when the two are pressed together. These keys do not generate a character by themselves but instead alter the input of a simultaneously pressed key to produce a different character or command. Common examples on a standard QWERTY keyboard include Shift, Control (Ctrl), Alt (Option on Mac), and the Command or Windows key.
