NTP
Term · Computing and IT · MLC-T-CMP-000826
A networking protocol for synchronizing the clocks of computer systems over packet-switched, variable-latency data networks. The Network Time Protocol (NTP) is designed to mitigate the effects of variable network delay by using a hierarchical system of time sources, each stratum assigned a number indicating its distance from the original reference clock. NTP can maintain time to within tens of milliseconds over the public internet and can achieve accuracies of 200 microseconds or better in local area networks.
