Clock cycle

The smallest unit of time in a computer's central processing unit (CPU), representing one oscillation of the CPU's internal clock. During each cycle, the CPU can perform a basic operation or a part of a more complex instruction. The duration of a clock cycle is the reciprocal of the clock speed, measured in hertz.
