The electronic circuitry within a computer that executes instructions from a computer program by performing basic arithmetic, logic, controlling, and input/output operations. Also known as a central processing unit (CPU), it is the primary component that drives the system's functions. The performance of a processor is measured by its clock speed, expressed in gigahertz (GHz), and the number of instructions it can execute per second.
