The principal hardware component of a computer that executes instructions from a program by performing basic arithmetic, logic, controlling, and input/output operations. A Central Processing Unit (CPU) contains at least one processor, which is the actual chip inside the CPU that performs calculations. Modern CPUs are microprocessors containing multiple processing cores, each capable of executing instruction sequences independently.
