The primary electronic circuitry within a computer or programmable logic controller that executes instructions. The central processing unit (CPU) performs the basic arithmetic, logic, controlling, and input/output operations specified by the instructions in a program. Its performance is measured by its clock speed, expressed in gigahertz (GHz), which indicates the number of cycles it can execute per second.
