Y2K
Term · Computing and IT · MLC-T-CMP-001411
A widespread computer programming problem that arose from the practice of abbreviating four-digit years to two digits in computer systems. This shorthand created ambiguity for dates after December 31, 1999, as systems might interpret '00' as 1900 instead of 2000, potentially causing system failures or incorrect calculations. Extensive remediation efforts were undertaken globally to update software and hardware before the year 2000.
