A period during which a computer system, network, or service is non-operational and unavailable to its users. This unavailability results from either planned events like system maintenance and upgrades, or unplanned incidents such as hardware failures, software bugs, or cyberattacks. System reliability is measured by uptime percentage, where a 'five nines' or 99.999% availability standard translates to approximately 5.26 minutes of total downtime per year.
