Consolidated metropolitan statistical area

Formerly, a geographic entity delineated by the Office of Management and Budget for use by federal statistical agencies. An area became a CMSA if it met the requirements to qualify as a metropolitan statistical area, had a population of 1,000,000 or more, if component parts were recognized as primary metropolitan statistical areas, and if local opinion favored the designation.
This concept was retired in 2003 with the introduction of the Core Based Statistical Areas concept.
