Bioassay
Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-003126
1. A method of testing a material's effects on living organisms.
2. Test used to evaluate the relative potency of a chemical by comparing its effect on living organisms with the effect of a standard preparation on the same type of organism. Bioassay and toxicity tests are not the same-see toxicity test. Bioassays often are run on a series of dilutions of whole effluents. (Pertains to Ecological Risk Assessments)
3. An assay for determining the potency (or concentration) of a substance that causes a biological change in experimental animals.
4. A test used to evaluate the relative potency of a chemical or a mixture of chemicals by comparing its effect on a living organism with the effect of a standard preparation on the same type of organism.
5. Test which determines the effect of a chemical on a living organism.
6. A laboratory test which determines the strength or biological effects of a unknown or experimental substance, such as a drug, hormone or chemical; the test is done by comparing the experimental substance's effects with those of a known substance on a culture of living cells or a test organism.
7. A test to determine the relative strength of a substance by comparing its effect on a test organism with that of a standard preparation.
8. A laboratory or field test in which living organisms are used to detect the presence of or test the effect of a particular substance, factor, or condition. Results are compared to a standard preparation or control to determine the relative strength of the substance, factor, or condition.
9. A test conducted in living organisms (in vivo) or with living cells (in vitro) to determine the hazard or potency of a chemical by its effect on animals, isolated tissues, or microorganisms.
10. A test to determine the relative strength of a substance by comparing its effect on a test organism with that of a standard preparation. [Federal Remediation Technologies Roundtable Glossary][EPA 2005b]
11. An assay for determining the potency (or concentration) of a substance that causes a biological change in experimental animals. [EPA 2003]
12. A test conducted in living organisms (in vivo) or with living cells (in vitro) to determine the hazard or potency of a chemical by its effect on animals, isolated tissues, or microorganisms. [OAQPS 1989]
13. A method used to determine the toxicity of specific chemical contaminants. A number of individuals of a sensitive species are placed in water containing specific concentrations of the contaminant for a specified period of time.
14. A test to determine the relative strength of a substance by comparing its effect on a test organism with that of a standard preparation. [EPA 2005b]
15. A method of testing a material’s effects on living organisms. [EPA 2005e]
16. Using living organisms to measure the effect of a substance, factor, or condition. [SRA 2004]
