Toxicity Test

1. The means by which the toxicity of a chemical or other test material is determined. A toxicity test is used to measure the degree of response produced by exposure to a specific level of stimulus (or concentration of chemical) compared with an unexposed control.
2. A procedure to determine the toxicity of a chemical or an effluent using living organisms. A toxicity test measures the degree of effect on exposed test organisms of a specific chemical or effluent.
3. Biological testing (usually with an cell system, invertebrate, fish, or small mammal) to determine the adverse effects of a compound.
