Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-009226

1. A substance which cannot be separated into its constituent parts and still retain its chemical identity. For example, sodium (Na) is an element.

2. A substance that cannot be chemically separated or broken down into other substances. All matter is composed of elements. Carbon and oxygen are examples of elements, but carbon dioxide is not an element because it can be broken down into carbon and oxygen.

3. Chemicals such as hydrogen (H), iron (Fe), sodium (Na), carbon (C), nitrogen (N), or oxygen (O), whose distinctly different atoms serve as the basic building blocks of all matter. There are 92 naturally occurring elements. Another 15 have been made in laboratories. Two or more elements combine to form compounds that make up most of the world's matter. See compound.
