1. A nucleotide sequence (of DNA or RNA) in a gene that codes for part or all of the gene product or for some control function. In eukaryotes, exons are separated by non-coding sequences called introns; that part of the gene (a section of DNA) that is transcribed into messenger RNA and encodes a protein.
2. A DNA sequence in a gene that codes for a gene product.
