1. The sum of the chemical reactions occurring within (the microorganism); includes the energy-releasing breakdown of molecules (catabolism) and the synthesis of new molecules (anabolism).
2. A term that encompasses all of the diverse reactions by which a (microorganism) processes food material to obtain energy and the compounds from which new cell components are made.
