No Observed Adverse Effects Level

The highest level of a chemical stressor in a toxicity test that did not cause harmful effect in a plant or animal. While NOAELs and NOAECs are similar, they are not interchangeable. A NOAEL refers to a dose of chemical that is ingested, while a NOAEC refers to direct exposure to a chemical (e.g., through gills or the skin).
