Lowest Observed Adverse Effect Level

Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-016164

  1. 1. The lowest dose in a toxicity study resulting in adverse health effects.

    2. The lowest level of a stressor that causes statistically and biologically significant differences in test samples as compared to other samples subjected to no stressor.

    3. The lowest dose or exposure level of a chemical in a study at which there is a statistically or biologically significant increase in the frequency or severity of an adverse effect in the exposed population as compared with an appropriate, unexposed control group. See also: NOAEL.

    4. The lowest level of a stressor evaluated in a test that causes statistically significant differences from the controls.

    5. The lowest exposure level at which there are biologically significant increases in frequency or severity of adverse effects between the exposed population and its appropriate control group.

    6. The lowest exposure level in a study or group of studies at which there are statistically or biologically significant increases in frequency or severity of adverse effects between the exposed population and its appropriate control group. Also referred to as lowest-effect level (LEL).

    7. The lowest tested dose of a substance that has been reported to cause harmful (adverse) health effects in people or animals.

  2. 1. The lowest exposure level at which there are biologically significant increases in frequency or severity of adverse effects between the exposed population and its appropriate control group.

    2. The lowest dose in an experiment which produced an observable adverse effect.

    3. The lowest exposure (or dose) level of a chemical at which there are statistically or biologically significant increases in frequency or severity of adverse effects between the exposed population and its appropriate control group. See A Review of the Reference Dose and Reference Concentration Processes (EPA, 2002).
