1. An estimate of an exposure for a given duration to the human population (including susceptible subgroups) that is likely to be without an appreciable risk of adverse health effects over a lifetime. It is derived from a BMDL, a NOAEL, a LOAEL, or another suitable point of departure, with uncertainty/variability factors applied to reflect limitations of the data used. [Durations include acute, short-term, subchronic, and chronic and are defined individually in this glossary.]
2. An estimation of an exposure for [a given duration] to the human population (including susceptible subgroups) that is likely to be without an appreciable risk of adverse effects over a lifetime. It is derived from a BMDL, a NOAEL, a LOAEL, or another suitable point of departure, with uncertainty/variability factors applied to reflect limitations of the data used.
3. Known concentration of a calibration gas, the known value of an electronic calibration signal, or the known value of any other measurement standard approved by the Administrator, assumed to be the true value for the pollutant or diluent concentration or volumetric flow being measured.
4. [EPA 2003]

| References | Reference value is a term proposed in the report, "A Review of the Reference Dose and Reference Concentration Processes" (EPA, 2002), and is a generic term not specific to a given route of exposure. EPA develops numerical toxicity values for the RfD and RfC only; no numerical toxicity values are developed for the RfV.; EPA 2003; 40 CFR 72.2 (CFR 2013); Thesaurus of Terms Used in Microbial Risk Assessment |
