Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-028389

1. A chemical or mixture that can cause illness, death, disease, or birth defects. The quantities and exposures necessary to cause these effects can vary widely. Many toxic substances are pollutants and contaminants in the environment.

2. A toxic substance is a chemical or mixture that may present an unreasonable risk of injury to health or the environment. Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) TSCA was enacted in 1976 to test, regulate, and screen all chemicals produced or imported into the U.S. TSCA requires that any chemical that reaches the consumer marketplace be tested for possible toxic effects prior to commercial manufacture. Any existing chemical that poses health and environmental hazards is tracked and reported under TSCA.

3. A chemical, physical, or biological agent that may cause an adverse effect or effects to biological systems.

4. A chemical or mixture that may present an unreasonable risk of injury to health or the environment.

5. A chemical or mixture that may represent an unreasonable risk of injury to health or the environment.

6. A substance that can cause short-term or long-term damage to biological tissue following contact or absorption. Routes of exposure of the substance include ingestion, inhalation, or assimilation into any organism, either directly from the environment or indirectly by ingestion through food chains.

7. Chemical, physical, or biological agent that may cause an adverse effect or effects to biological systems.
