An acronym for Airborne Collision Avoidance System, an aircraft system designed to prevent mid-air collisions by monitoring the airspace around an aircraft for other transponder-equipped aircraft. It provides advisories to the pilot, ranging from traffic advisories (TAs) to resolution advisories (RAs) that recommend specific evasive maneuvers. ACAS operates independently of ground-based air traffic control and is mandated for most commercial aircraft.
