Airspace
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-000145
A defined, uninsulated gap between building components, such as within a cavity wall or between panes of glass in an insulated glazing unit. This gap is intended to provide thermal insulation, reduce sound transmission, or serve as a drainage plane for moisture. The insulating value of an airspace is maximized at a width of about 0.75 inches (20 mm), after which convection currents begin to reduce its effectiveness.
