A marine insurance principle that distributes the cost of certain losses among all parties with an interest in the voyage or cargo. General average applies when a sacrifice is made to save the entire venture, such as jettisoning cargo during a storm. Particular average covers partial losses to specific cargo or the vessel itself, not shared by other parties.
