Black

The portion of a wildland fire's area that has already burned, leaving behind charred vegetation and cooled ash. Firefighters work from the black, a relatively safe zone, to attack the active fire front or to secure the fire's edge and prevent re-ignition from smoldering embers. In contrast, the unburned area ahead of the fire is called the green.
