Blackwash
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-000589
A refractory coating, typically a suspension of graphite or another carbon-based material in water or a solvent, applied to the interior surfaces of a sand mold or core. It creates a non-stick barrier between the molten metal and the sand, preventing metal penetration and producing a smoother surface finish on the final casting. The coating is applied by spraying, brushing, or dipping before the mold is closed.
