A piece of wood, metal, or linoleum engraved or carved with an image for use in relief printing. The raised areas of the block receive ink and transfer it to the substrate, while the cut-away areas remain unprinted. This method, known as block printing, is one of the oldest forms of printing, with examples dating back to ancient China.
