Ink-block

A flat block or table, often of metal, stone or glass, on which printer's ink is spread and worked smooth before rollers or hand ink balls pick it up to ink the type form. It served as the ink supply on hand presses and small jobbing presses, where it plays the role that the ink fountain and roller train play on a mechanized press. It is also called an ink slab.
