Bt
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-000804
A common abbreviation for Bacillus thuringiensis, a soil bacterium whose spores and protein crystals are used as a biological insecticide. The crystal proteins are toxic when swallowed by the larvae of particular insect groups, such as moths, beetles or flies depending on the strain, and have very low toxicity to people and most wildlife. Genes for these proteins are also engineered into Bt crops such as corn and cotton, and Bt sprays are permitted in organic farming.
