Buffer car

A railway car placed between a locomotive and cars carrying hazardous materials, or between a manned locomotive and a remote-controlled one, to provide a safety separation. This car acts as a protective barrier in case of impact or derailment, reducing the risk to personnel or sensitive cargo. It is often an empty freight car or a specially designated vehicle.
