Buffer beam

A transverse structural member at the extreme ends of a railway vehicle's underframe, to which the buffers and draw gear are attached. It is designed to transmit buffing and draw forces along the main frame of the locomotive or rolling stock. On steam locomotives, the buffer beam is a prominent, thick steel plate at the front, often painted red for visibility.
