The act of tallying cargo items during loading or unloading to verify the quantity against shipping documents like the bill of lading or manifest. This verification process is performed by tally clerks who record each unit, bundle, or container as it is moved on or off the vessel. Discrepancies between the count and the manifest must be noted and reconciled to resolve claims for short or over-landed goods.
