Cowcatcher

A frame fixed to the front of a railway locomotive, designed to deflect obstacles from the track. Also known as a pilot, it consists of a V-shaped or wedge-shaped assembly of steel bars or plates positioned low to the ground. Its purpose is to clear debris, animals, or other obstructions to prevent derailment, rather than to literally catch them.
