A safety drag or brake attached to the rear of a set of tubs or mine cars being pulled up an incline. If the haulage rope or coupling breaks, the device digs into the track or floor, preventing the cars from running away back down the slope. This purely mechanical device, also known as a backstay or devil, operates automatically without needing external power or control.
