Cuddy

A small recess or shelter excavated into the side of an underground roadway, tunnel, or working area. It serves as a safe place for personnel to take cover from moving vehicles or during blasting, and can also be used for storing tools or equipment. In some historical contexts, the term also referred to a simple lever-and-fulcrum lifting device or a small cart used for haulage.
