Dry off

The practice of ceasing to milk a dairy cow for a period before she is due to calve. This managed non-lactating phase allows the udder tissue to regenerate and prepares the cow for her next lactation cycle. The dry period typically lasts from 45 to 60 days, after which milking resumes following the birth of the new calf.
