Dry sump
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-001896
An engine lubrication system that stores engine oil in a separate reservoir, rather than in the oil pan directly beneath the engine. A scavenge pump extracts oil from the engine's sump and sends it to the external tank, from which a pressure pump then delivers it to the engine. This design maintains consistent oil pressure during high G-force maneuvers and permits a lower engine mounting position.
