Lifeguard

A protective device mounted at the front of a tram or streetcar, designed to scoop up or deflect objects and people from the track. This mechanism reduces the risk of serious injury or damage in the event of a collision with an obstruction. Early versions were often referred to as 'fenders' or 'cowcatchers' on locomotives.
