Track pan

Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-006103

A long trough of water laid between the rails of a main line, from which a steam locomotive fills its tender at speed by lowering a scoop into the water. Forward motion forces the water up the scoop pipe into the tender, so the train need not stop. The arrangement was devised by John Ramsbottom in the 1860s and is called a water trough in Britain.
