The total approved operational time or number of cycles for an aircraft, engine, or component before it must be retired from service or undergo a major overhaul. This limit is established by the manufacturer and approved by aviation authorities based on design calculations, fatigue analysis, and testing. For example, a turbine disk may have a life limit of 15,000 flight cycles, after which it must be replaced regardless of its apparent condition.
