Critter

A colloquial name for a small industrial switching locomotive, typically with a low power output and a simple mechanical or hydraulic transmission. These engines are used for moving a few cars at a time within industrial plants, yards, or construction sites. Many critters were built by companies other than major locomotive manufacturers, such as Plymouth, Whitcomb, or Davenport.
