Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-005815
A small, low-power locomotive designed for moving rail cars within a freight yard, industrial plant, or passenger terminal, a task known as switching or shunting. These engines are built for high starting tractive effort and low-speed maneuverability rather than for mainline speed, featuring excellent visibility for the operator. Switchers are distinct from road switchers, which are larger, more powerful locomotives capable of both yard work and mainline freight or passenger service.
