D-sub

A common type of electrical connector named for its characteristic D-shaped metal shield. This shape provides mechanical stability and prevents incorrect mating by allowing insertion in only one orientation. D-subminiature connectors are specified by their shell size and pin count, such as the DE-9 connector formerly used for RS-232 serial ports.
